23.1.2 The Hopf metric and its massCFFF1A0C2E2E

The projection to $\mathbb P^2$ separates the horizontal and vertical parts of the metric. We normalize the fiber measure to have mass one; this fixes the constants in the mass formula.

On the covering space $\mathbb C^3\setminus \{ 0\} $, with coordinates $z=(z_0,z_1,z_2)$, put

\[ s=\log |z|^2,\qquad \alpha =\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}s,\qquad \beta =\mathrm{d}s\wedge \mathrm d^{\mathrm c}s =\frac{\mathrm i}{2\pi }\partial s\wedge \bar\partial s, \qquad \omega =\alpha +\beta . \]

The contraction $z\mapsto \mathrm{e}^{-1}z$ changes $s$ by the constant $-2$, so these forms descend to $X$. A closed spherical shell between two successive radii is a compact fundamental domain; this also proves that the quotient is compact. Let $\omega _{\mathrm{FS}}$ be the Fubini–Study form on $\mathbb P^2$, given by $\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}\log (1+|\xi |^2)$ in affine coordinates $\xi =(\xi _1,\xi _2)$. Projectivization gives a holomorphic map

\[ \pi :X\longrightarrow \mathbb P^2, \qquad \alpha =\pi ^*\omega _{\mathrm{FS}},\qquad \int _{\mathbb P^2}\omega _{\mathrm{FS}}^2=1. \]

The form $\alpha $ has rank two and is positive transversally to the fibers, while the rank-one form $\beta $ is positive on the vertical line. Their kernels intersect only in zero, and therefore $\omega >0$.

We shall use the identities

25275E5CD565 23.1.3
\begin{equation} \alpha ^3=0,\quad \beta ^2=0,\quad \mathrm{d}\alpha =0, \quad \mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}\beta =-\alpha ^2, \quad \mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}(\omega ^2)=0. \end{equation}

The first three follow from the definitions and the dimension of the base. For the fourth, differentiating $\beta =\mathrm i\partial s\wedge \bar\partial s/(2\pi )$ gives $\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}\beta =(\partial \bar\partial s)^2/(4\pi ^2)=-\alpha ^2$. Finally, $\omega ^2=\alpha ^2+2\alpha \wedge \beta $, so $\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}(\omega ^2)=-2\alpha ^3=0$. Thus $\omega $ is Gauduchon, although $\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}\omega =-\alpha ^2\ne 0$.

On the affine base chart $U_0=\{ [z_0:z_1:z_2]\in \mathbb P^2:z_0\ne 0\} \simeq \mathbb C^2$ write

\[ \xi _ j=z_ j/z_0\quad (j=1,2),\qquad w=\log z_0. \]

The choice of logarithm and the contraction change $w$ by elements of $\Lambda =\mathbb Z+2\pi \mathrm i\mathbb Z$. Hence

\[ \pi ^{-1}(U_0)\simeq U_0\times E,\qquad E=\mathbb C/\Lambda ,\qquad \mathrm{d}A_ E=\frac{\mathrm i}{4\pi }\mathrm{d}w\wedge \mathrm{d}\bar w, \quad \int _ E\mathrm{d}A_ E=1. \]

On another base chart the fiber coordinate changes by a holomorphic function of the base. Consequently, the vertical derivative $\partial _ w$ and the fiber integral below are globally defined. For a smooth function $V$ on $X$, write $V_ w=\partial V/\partial w$.

Proposition 23.1.4.DDEBFFAFCD1F For every $V\in C^\infty (X,\mathbb R)$,

C46F0B405DC2 23.1.5
\begin{equation} \int _ X(\omega +\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}V)^3 =6+6\int _{\mathbb P^2} \left(\int _{\pi ^{-1}(y)}|V_ w|^2\, \mathrm{d}A_ E\right) \omega _{\mathrm{FS}}^2(y). \end{equation}

In particular, positivity of $\omega +\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}V$ is not required.

Proof. Since $\beta $ restricts to $2\mathrm{d}A_ E$ on each fiber,

\[ \int _ X\omega ^3=3\int _ X\alpha ^2\wedge \beta =6. \]

By (11.1.6) and (23.1.3), followed by an integration by parts against the closed form $\alpha ^2$,

\[ \begin{split} \int _ X(\omega +\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}V)^3-\int _ X\omega ^3 & =3\int _ X V\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}\omega \wedge \mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}V\\ & =-3\int _ X V\alpha ^2\wedge \mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}V =3\int _ X\mathrm{d}V\wedge \mathrm d^{\mathrm c}V\wedge \alpha ^2. \end{split} \]

Wedging with $\alpha ^2$ removes every component of $\mathrm{d}V\wedge \mathrm d^{\mathrm c}V$ except the vertical one, which is $\mathrm i|V_ w|^2\mathrm{d}w\wedge \mathrm{d}\bar w/(2\pi )=2|V_ w|^2\mathrm{d}A_ E$. Integration over the fibers proves the formula. $\square$
