10.18 Divisorial components at the threshold89CEBB4B3B57

89CEBB4B3B57

A divisorial component of a Hermitian current consumes part of its Gauduchon trace but contributes no density to its non-pluripolar measure. It can therefore lower the largest coefficient in a Monge–Ampère subsolution inequality. At the maximal coefficient, every weak limit of a maximizing sequence of Gauduchon tests annihilates the class of the divisor, and uniform integrability along the sequence makes the limit a maximizer.

In this section $X$ is again an arbitrary compact complex manifold, now of dimension $n\geq 2$, with the Hermitian form $\omega $. Fix a smooth strictly positive probability volume form $\mathrm{d}V$ and a nonzero function $0\leq f\in L^1(\mathrm{d}V)$, and write $p=f^{1/n}$ for its root density. Let $b=b_\omega (f)$ be its subsolution threshold: by theorem 15.28.4, it is the largest $a\geq 0$ for which some $u\in \mathrm{PSH}(X,\omega )$ satisfies $\mathrm{MA}^{\mathrm{ext}}_\omega (u)\geq af\, \mathrm{d}V$, where $\mathrm{MA}^{\mathrm{ext}}_\omega $ is the extended non-pluripolar Monge–Ampère measure of theorem 13.14.3. Such a $u$ with $a=b$ is a threshold subsolution in the sense of section 15.28. We also use the following notation from section 11.7, section 12.10. The set $\mathscr G_\omega $ consists of the positive $(n-1,n-1)$-currents $T$ with $\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}T=0$ and $\int _ X\omega \wedge T=1$, and $\mathscr C_\omega \subset \mathscr G_\omega $ is the weak closure of its smooth strictly positive members, the normalized powers $\gamma ^{n-1}$ of Gauduchon metrics $\gamma $. For $T\in \mathscr G_\omega $, the determinant measure of $T$ has the form $\Gamma _0(T)=k_ T\, \mathrm{d}V$ by theorem 12.9.1, and $D_ p(T)=\int _ Xp k_ T\, \mathrm{d}V$. The root norm $\rho _\omega (p)=b^{-1/n}$ is the supremum of $D_ p$ over $\mathscr G_\omega $, and $\mathcal D_\omega ^0$ is the closure of the bounded functions in the space of roots with finite root norm. Finally, $\kappa _\omega (\beta )$ is the linear positivity threshold of a smooth real $(1,1)$-form $\beta $ from corollary 11.6.2, the infimum over Gauduchon metrics $\gamma $ of $\int _ X\beta \wedge \gamma ^{n-1}/\int _ X\omega \wedge \gamma ^{n-1}$.

Proposition 10.18.1.7B0AC7895B1F Let $c>0$ be real and let $E$ be an effective real divisor on $X$. Suppose $u\in \mathrm{PSH}(X,\omega )$ satisfies

\[ \mathrm{MA}^{\mathrm{ext}}_\omega (u)\geq c f\, \mathrm{d}V, \qquad \omega +\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}u\geq [E]. \]

Let $\beta _ E$ be a smooth closed representative of the Bott–Chern class of $[E]$, and put $\kappa =\kappa _\omega (\beta _ E)$. Then $b>0$, $0\leq \kappa <1$ and

C6FE80302EDE 10.18.2
\begin{equation} c\leq b(1-\kappa )^ n. \end{equation}

Suppose that $c=b$, and let $(T_ j)$ be a smooth maximizing sequence for $D_ p$, that is, a sequence of smooth strictly positive forms $T_ j\in \mathscr G_\omega $ with $D_ p(T_ j)\to \rho _\omega (p)$. Then

\[ \int _ X\beta _ E\wedge T_ j=\int _ X[E]\wedge T_ j\longrightarrow 0. \]

Every weak cluster current $T$ therefore satisfies $\int _ X\beta _ E\wedge T=0$, and the class of $E$ is not big. If the densities $p k_{T_ j}$ of the chosen sequence are uniformly integrable, every such cluster current maximizes $D_ p$. In particular, this holds for every smooth maximizing sequence when $p\in \mathcal D_\omega ^0$.

Proof. By theorem 15.28.4, $b\geq c>0$. Let $T\in \mathscr G_\omega $ be smooth and strictly positive. By lemma 13.14.12, the measure

\[ R=(\omega +\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}u)\wedge T-c^{1/n}p k_ T\, \mathrm{d}V \]

is positive, and its mass is $1-c^{1/n}D_ p(T)$. The absolutely continuous term gives no mass to the support of $E$, whereas $[E]\wedge T$ is concentrated there. Restricting $R$ to the support of $E$ and using $\omega +\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}u\geq [E]$ therefore gives

\[ \int _ X[E]\wedge T\leq R(X)=1-c^{1/n}D_ p(T). \]

Let $\ell _ E$ be a global logarithmic potential, so that $[E]=\beta _ E+\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}\ell _ E$ by the Poincaré–Lelong formula. Since $\ell _ E$ is locally integrable and $T$ is smooth with $\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}T=0$, Stokes' theorem for currents identifies the left side with $\int _ X\beta _ E\wedge T$. This integral is nonnegative for every such $T$, so $\kappa \geq 0$; since $D_ p(T)>0$, we also get $\kappa <1$. Taking the supremum of $D_ p(T)$, which is $\rho _\omega (p)=b^{-1/n}$, proves (10.18.2).

Now let $c=b$, and let $(T_ j)$ be a smooth maximizing sequence. Then the right side of the preceding bound tends to zero. Since pairing with the fixed smooth form $\beta _ E$ is continuous under weak convergence of currents, every cluster current satisfies $\int _ X\beta _ E\wedge T=0$. Moreover, (10.18.2) with $c=b$ forces $\kappa =0$, so the class of $E$ is not big by corollary 11.6.2. If the densities along the sequence are uniformly integrable, proposition 12.10.6 shows that every cluster current maximizes $D_ p$. When $p\in \mathcal D_\omega ^0$, theorem 12.10.1 gives this uniform integrability for every sequence. $\square$

Geometrically, at the threshold $c=b$ with $E\ne 0$, the equation $\int _ X\beta _ E\wedge T=0$ defines a nonempty proper exposed face of $\mathscr C_\omega $. Indeed, $\mathscr C_\omega $ is compact and convex, and the pairing with $\beta _ E$ is continuous and nonnegative on it and strictly positive on every smooth strictly positive member. The proposition places every cluster current of a smooth maximizing sequence on this face. The statement concerns $\mathscr C_\omega $, which can be strictly smaller than $\mathscr G_\omega $, as the next example shows. Moreover, for a singular $T$ the smooth pairing $\int _ X\beta _ E\wedge T$ does not define a product $[E]\wedge T$.

The difference between $\mathscr C_\omega $ and $\mathscr G_\omega $ comes from positive currents that pair negatively with a class which is nonnegative on all smooth tests. Integration currents along negative curves give such examples.

Example 10.18.3.0C57A6C5BFEC The weak closure $\mathscr C_\omega $ of the smooth strictly positive normalized Gauduchon forms can be smaller than $\mathscr G_\omega $, even on a Kähler surface. Let $X$ be the blowup of $\mathbb P^2$ at one point and $C$ its exceptional curve. Fix a Kähler form $\omega $ and a smooth closed representative $\beta _ C$ of the class of $[C]$. Then

\[ T_ C=\frac{[C]}{\int _ C\omega }\in \mathscr G_\omega , \qquad \int _ X\beta _ C\wedge T_ C=\frac{-1}{\int _ C\omega }<0, \]

whereas every smooth strictly positive $T\in \mathscr G_\omega $ satisfies $\int _ X\beta _ C\wedge T=\int _ C T>0$. In particular $T_ C\notin \mathscr C_\omega $.

Proof. The integration current $[C]$ is positive and closed, so its normalization belongs to $\mathscr G_\omega $. Its pairing with the smooth form $\beta _ C$ is the self-intersection $C^2=-1$, computed in example 12.6.3. For smooth $T$, the Poincaré–Lelong formula and $\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}T=0$ give the second identity. Since the pairing with the fixed smooth form $\beta _ C$ is continuous under weak convergence of currents, it is nonnegative on the weak closure of the smooth tests, and this closure does not contain $T_ C$. $\square$

Let $m_\omega (\beta )$ be the minimum of $\int _ X\beta \wedge T$ over all $T\in \mathscr G_\omega $, as in section 12.34, whereas by (11.7.2) the threshold $\kappa _\omega (\beta )$ is the minimum over $\mathscr C_\omega $. Since $[C]$ is a positive representative of the class of $\beta _ C$, the two thresholds satisfy

\[ m_\omega (\beta _ C)\leq -\frac1{\int _ C\omega }<0 \leq \kappa _\omega (\beta _ C). \]

Thus extending the minimum in (11.7.2) to all normalized Gauduchon currents changes its value in this example.

We return to the general setting $(X,\omega ,f)$ of this section. The next two corollaries assume uniform integrability along one smooth maximizing sequence. The condition $p\in \mathcal D_\omega ^0$ suffices, since it gives $b>0$ and uniform integrability over the whole of $\mathscr G_\omega $.

Corollary 10.18.4.852EFF5927B9 Assume $b>0$ and that $D_ p$ has a smooth maximizing sequence $(T_ j)$ with uniformly integrable densities $p k_{T_ j}$. Let $E$ be an effective real divisor whose class has a smooth semipositive representative $\beta _ E$. If

\[ \int _{\{ \beta _ E=0\} }f\, \mathrm{d}V=0, \]

then no threshold subsolution $u$ for $f$ satisfies $\omega +\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}u\geq [E]$.

Proof. Suppose such a subsolution exists. By proposition 10.18.1, there is a maximizing current $T\in \mathscr G_\omega $ with $\int _ X\beta _ E\wedge T=0$. We use the matrix-density notation of section 12.7: $\sigma _ T=\omega \wedge T$ is the trace measure of $T$, $P_ T$ is its matrix density and $B$ is the coefficient matrix of $\beta _ E$. Since both matrices are positive semidefinite, the vanishing pairing gives $\operatorname {tr}(BP_ T)=0$ at $\sigma _ T$-almost every point. Wherever $B\ne 0$, this forces $P_ T$ to be singular: a positive definite $P_ T$ would have strictly positive trace against the nonzero positive semidefinite matrix $B$. The determinant measure $\Gamma _0(T)$ vanishes where $P_ T$ is singular, so it is concentrated on $\{ \beta _ E=0\} $. By theorem 12.9.1, $\Gamma _0(T)=k_ T\, \mathrm{d}V$, and the hypothesis on $f$ gives $p k_ T=0$ almost everywhere. This contradicts $D_ p(T)=\rho _\omega (p)>0$. $\square$

Corollary 10.18.5.A786309EB514 Assume $b>0$ and that $D_ p$ has a smooth maximizing sequence $(T_ j)$ with uniformly integrable densities $p k_{T_ j}$. Let $u\in \mathrm{PSH}(X,\omega )$ be a threshold subsolution for $f$, and suppose that $\omega +\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}u\geq [E]$ for an effective real divisor $E$ whose Bott–Chern class is nef. Let $\beta _ E$ be any smooth closed representative of that class. Then for every smooth strictly positive probability measure $\mu $, the Gauduchon root volume of definition 12.2.1 satisfies

\[ \lambda _\mu (\beta _ E)=0. \]

Proof. By proposition 10.18.1, there is a maximizing current $T\in \mathscr G_\omega $ with $\int _ X\beta _ E\wedge T=0$. If $\lambda _\mu (\beta _ E)>0$, then proposition 12.34.2 gives $\Gamma _0(T)=0$, hence $D_{f^{1/n}}(T)=0$, contradicting the positivity of its maximal value. Since the nef class of $\beta _ E$ has $\lambda _\mu (\beta _ E)\geq 0$, the conclusion follows for each $\mu $. $\square$

The semipositive criterion and the nef-volume criterion detect different obstructions. On the Hopf threefold, the class of a hyperplane divisor has zero variational volume, so corollary 10.18.5 says nothing about it, but its nowhere vanishing semipositive representative excludes a divisorial component at the threshold.

To see this, let $X$ be the Hopf threefold with its Hopf metric $\omega =\alpha +\zeta $ (section 23.1, section 12.36), where $\alpha $ is the pullback of the Fubini–Study form under the elliptic fibration $X\to \mathbb P^2$, and let $H$ be the inverse image of a projective hyperplane. The class of $H$ is represented by $\alpha $, which is semipositive of rank two everywhere. Its variational volume vanishes for every smooth positive volume form $\mu $: the metrics $\gamma _ t=\alpha +t\zeta $, $t>0$, are Gauduchon by the proof of proposition 12.36.1, and since $\alpha ^3=\zeta ^2=0$ and $\omega ^3=3\alpha ^2\wedge \zeta $, one has $\int _ X\alpha \wedge \gamma _ t^2=\tfrac {2t}{3}\int _ X\omega ^3$ and $\gamma _ t^3=t\, \omega ^3$. Hence the quotient in definition 12.2.1 is $O(t^{1/3})$ as $t\downarrow 0$. By corollary 23.1.40, proposition 15.32.9, one has $\mathcal D_\omega ^0=L^3$ on this example. Hence, for every nonzero nonnegative $L^1$ density, a threshold subsolution has zero generic Lelong coefficient along $H$. Otherwise divisorial removal, as in proposition 12.35.1, would give $\omega +\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}u\geq a[H]$ for some $a>0$, contradicting corollary 10.18.4 applied to $aH$. This exclusion uses no bounded mass property. It is also stronger here than nonbigness of the class of $H$: the residual formulas of proposition 12.36.1 allow a positive coefficient along $H$ when the equation constant is smaller than the threshold.

These conditions concern the maximal global coefficient. Whether threshold subsolutions with divisorial components can be constructed from the resulting annihilating currents is open; the threshold within a prescribed singularity type is a different problem.
