Theorem 11.8.1.B0762464DCDC If $C_{\delta _ j}$ stays bounded along a sequence $\delta _ j\downarrow 0$, then some global analytic hypersurface contains $U'\times \{ 0\} $. In particular, on a manifold without analytic hypersurfaces, $C_\delta \to \infty $ as $\delta \downarrow 0$.

Let $\mathcal T_\omega $ be the smooth strictly positive members of the normalized current cone $\mathscr G_\omega $ of section 11.7. Thus every $\Theta \in \mathcal T_\omega $ satisfies $\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}\Theta =0$ and $\int _ X\omega \wedge \Theta =1$. These tests form a weakly relatively compact family, but their pairings with a form concentrating transversely to a hypersurface need not stay bounded. A uniform bound would, by duality, produce a potential whose curvature charges the local hypersurface. Analyticity of Lelong level sets then forces a global hypersurface.
Choose a product coordinate chart $(z,\zeta )\in U\times \Delta _ r$, with $z\in \mathbb C^{n-1}$, and a smooth compactly supported $0\leq \chi \leq 1$ on $U$, equal to one on a nonempty connected smaller polydisk $U'$. Put $\sigma _\zeta =(\mathrm i/(2\pi ))\, \mathrm d\zeta \wedge \mathrm d\bar\zeta $. Fix $p\in C_ c^\infty (\mathbb C)$, nonnegative and supported in the closed unit disk, with $\int p\, \sigma _\zeta =1$. For small $\delta >0$ extend
by zero to $X$, and set
The form $B_\delta $ is smooth and semipositive. For fixed $\delta $ it is bounded above by a finite multiple of $\omega $, so $C_\delta <\infty $.
Proof. Suppose $C_{\delta _ j}\leq M$ and put $\kappa =(M+1)^{-1}$. Normalizing any smooth strictly positive $\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}$-closed complementary form gives
The generalized Lamari criterion, theorem 11.6.1, supplies $v_ j$ with
Since $B_{\delta _ j}\geq 0$, the potentials belong to the fixed normalized $\omega $-plurisubharmonic family. By theorem 5.25.2, a subsequence converges in $L^1$ to $v\in \mathrm{PSH}(X,\omega )$. The transverse approximate identity converges to $\chi [\zeta =0]$, so passing in distributions gives
On a smaller chart meeting the inner hypersurface, add a smooth $\rho $ with $\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}\rho \geq \omega $. The closed positive current $\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}(v+\rho )$ dominates $\kappa [\zeta =0]$ where $\chi =1$. Hence the Lelong number of $v$ is at least $\kappa $ at every point of $U'\times \{ 0\} $. By Siu's theorem in 5.34.2, the set $Z=\{ \nu (v,\cdot )\geq \kappa \} $ is analytic and has dimension at most $n-1$. Smooth local corrections do not change its definition. The compact analytic set $Z$ has finitely many global irreducible components. Their intersections with the connected inner hypersurface are analytic subsets covering it. At least one intersection is the whole hypersurface, since finitely many proper analytic subsets cannot cover an open polydisk. That component has dimension $n-1$ and is the required global hypersurface. If no such hypersurface exists, there is no bounded sequence $C_{\delta _ j}$ with $\delta _ j\downarrow 0$, which proves the asserted divergence. $\square$
Proposition 11.8.2.26C9605156BE Suppose an effective Cartier divisor agrees, with multiplicity one, with $\{ \zeta =0\} $ throughout the chosen coordinate chart. Then $C_\delta $ is uniformly bounded for all sufficiently small $\delta $.
Proof. Let $s$ be the canonical section of its divisor line bundle. In the chart write $s=\zeta e$ with $e$ a nonvanishing holomorphic frame. Choose a smooth Hermitian metric $h$ with $|e|_ h=1$ on a neighborhood of $\operatorname {supp}\chi \times \{ |\zeta |\leq \delta _0\} $ for a fixed small $\delta _0>0$. The smooth global functions $\psi _\delta =\log (|s|_ h^2+\delta ^2)$ satisfy $\mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}\psi _\delta \geq -C\omega $ with one $C\geq 1$. Off the divisor their Hessians are a bounded scalar multiple of the negative curvature of $h$, plus a semipositive gradient term; continuity gives the same lower bound at the divisor. Fix $0<\epsilon \leq (2C)^{-1}$, so $\omega +\epsilon \mathrm{dd}^{\mathrm{c}}\psi _\delta \geq \omega /2$. On the flat-frame region,
If $P=\| p\| _\infty $, then $B_\delta \leq P\delta ^{-2}\sigma _\zeta $ on its support. Therefore
globally for $\delta \leq \delta _0$. Every $\Theta \in \mathcal T_\omega $ gives, by smooth Stokes,
Taking the supremum proves $C_\delta \leq 4P/\epsilon $. $\square$
The uniform bound requires the divisor to agree on the entire cutoff chart. A global hypersurface supplied by the preceding theorem can have further branches there, so the theorem does not provide this converse at arbitrary intersections. Divergence of the transverse pairing alone also gives no lower bound for the volume of the positive root of a test.
